I’ve chosen Game of Thrones for your second cultural analysis paper, because the seventh season of the HBO series will premiere in July and the show will surely generate a great deal of conversation, it has a fiercely loyal fan base and it is the target of extensive criticism. It is a graphically violent show that is owned by HBO.Here is a link to 4 episodes of GOT (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..Beyond the episodes above, there are many clips from the show available on youtube, a sample of which I will embed below, and the required readings should paint a relatively clear picture of what the show is all about. Please read all of the following reviews of the show and check out the four episodes above and the clips below and then respond to the prompt.Reviews:Game of Thrones and the Good Ruler Complex (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. The Aristocrats: The graphic arts of Game of Thrones (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.Game of Thrones: Too much racism and sexism, so I stopped watching (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.Game of Thrones: Is race relevant in a fantasy world? I would like you to choose any theorist whose work we have reviewed so far this semester to address one or more of the controversies and debates represented in the reviews. For example, you might use Zizek’s notion of fantasy to address the theme of the Search for a Good Ruler described in the review by Laurie Penny. Or, you might use Gramsci’s notion of hegemony to explain how real oppression is represented, reinforced and resisted within the narrative of the show as well as in the debates about the narrative. Or you might use Foucaults concept of the panopticon to discuss how power and knowledge articulate with surveillance in Game of Thrones. Or you could come up with your own angle!!!!!Here is a bit more background that might help to spark some ideas. Toward the end of this interview with George RR Martin (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., the author says this,”Yeah, yeah. You know, when you write, when I write, anyway, I want to engage my readers’ emotions or my viewers’ emotions. You know, death is a big thing. When we experience death in real life, it affects us, you know. When a spouse dies or your parents die, your brother dies, your dog gets run over or, God forbid, one of your children dies, rips your heart out. It affects you, emotionally. If we’re creating characters that we care about, we should react in a similar way when they die in fiction or television. It shouldn’t be just, “Oh, OK. That character’s dead. Let me go out and get a sandwich during the commercial.” I mean, then you’re not doing your job. I want to grab hold of my readers and make them cry and make them grieve and make them laugh as well and experience joy, experience the worlds on the page as if they were living them. That’s the dream of me, at least, and I think of most writers.”Either way, I’m looking forward to reading your papers on Game of Thronesand cultural theory!Logistics: cultural analysis of Game of Thrones using some of the threories of poipular culture we have read in this class. should be 2-3 pages
